SpiralFrog is the largest database of legitimately free music on the web. This does not include all the illegal P2P sites hovering around the Internet. All music downloaded from SprialFrog has the permission of the artist or record label, and both are compensated in some way when you download the track.
They have about 800,000 songs all formatted to WMA and have DRM protection. This means you can not play them on an iPod or Zune. We found some songs by artists like Fergie, Maroon 5 and Gwen Stefani; however, most top 40 artist were absent or sparsely available.
Like everything free there’s a catch. SprialFrog relies heavily on advertisements and you will be bombarded with ads at every turn of your browsing experience and since your songs have Digital Rights Management imbedded in them you can only transfer songs to two portables and your library relies on your signing in to your SpiralFrog account at least once a month and syncing your music with your account. Much like a subscription, if you stop going to the site your tracks will expire.
We found this site to be an interesting step toward free music, but in the end you get what you pay for, and perhaps SpiralFrog is more hassle than it is truly worth.
