Music Industry to Offer "Free" Music Downloads
The music industry has had to take a deep look at where they're going and what their goals for the future are. It's no secret that they've been having some trouble from those mean music pirates and they've officially realized that if they don't make some major lifestyle changes they're not going to be around to watch their grandkids grow up.So, the new theme is: if you can't beat em, join em.
The music industry has announced they will be providing "free and unlimited" music downloads to all who wish to partake. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it is. Because, although the music industry is putting on a good angelic face and pretending like they're surrendering, they're not. What they're doing is a sneaky and underhanded, somewhat desperate, way to try to survive.
Now music companies are going to be offering "free" music from your cell phone. They're going to have this access as part of your new cell phone contract or your internet service fees. This new music fee will be somewhat hidden, disguised amongst the hundreds of other charges you don't understand and the music industry gets to slap "free and legal music" on this new plan and go home fat and happy. At the same time, they're also putting real pressure on internet service providers to shut down illegal music trafficking.
As much as I'd like to, I just can't get excited about this news. Like I said, it feels a little underhanded. Plus, I think the music industry will have to realize some day that they'll get more flies with money, I mean honey. I think that if the music industry lets us keep our money and works hard to come up with alternative revenue sources (say through advertising on truly free and legal music download sites) and offer truly free music, they'll be in a better position. It will definitely be better than where they are now, spending money to try and stop the pirates and trying to trick us into paying for free music. But that's just my opinion.
Look for some announcements about partnerships and new features on your cell phone contracts and what not, this new deal should be in full swing around the middle of the year.
