Masterbeat is an online music download service catering to those interested in Hip Hop, Dance and Electronica. Relatively new to the music download scene, Masterbeat combines an attractive online user interface with an interesting mix of artists.

We liked that you could sample an unlimited number of songs in their entirety, unlike most services that limit samples to thirty seconds. We also liked the easy-to-use intuitive interface. The whole site is built using Flash which makes it very attractive.

Songs are available in a variety of formats including MP3, WMA and WAV. Most songs and albums are available in two of the three format options. Prices range from $.99 WMA tracks to $1.49-$1.99 MP3s to $2.99 WAV tracks. WAV is a high quality format and usually about $1 more than an MP3. All MP3s are available at a 320kbps bitrate. This is the only site we reviewed that offered this bitrate; it is the highest quality sound next to the original CD recording. WMA tracks include DRM protection, but MP3 tracks do not.

We found that Masterbeat only offers about 1.5 million songs, compared to our top three services that have more than 5-million-plus libraries. Some mainstream artists include Jennifer Hudson, Cyndi Lauper and Kelly Clarkson. However, Masterbeat specializes in smaller independent labels.

Masterbeat is a good option for those looking for independent rappers or Remixers. On the other hand, if you are looking for more mainstream top 40 tracks, see one of the top three services, iTunes, Napster, Amazon MP3.
