PROS / Average song prices are extremely low.
CONS / Songs are encoded at different bitrates, and usually at a lower quality.
VERDICT / The variable song quality gives us pause. We recommend extreme caution when using this service.
LegalSounds is a small online music store based out of Russia. They would not release their library size, though we found they had a fair selection that included top 40 hits from around the world all in MP3 format.
We found that the price of a typical song is $.09 and whole albums less than a dollar. This is considerably cheaper than almost all the other services in this review, nevertheless, it also makes the site extremely suspect.
Additionally, we found there is no consistent bitrate even for songs available on the same albums. On one album, we found bitrates varying from 168kbps to 203kbps. In a general search, we found some songs encoded as low as 102kbps and some as high as 320kbps. These are the kinds of inconsistencies that continued to make us nervous while evaluating this service.
Searching for artists is easy; simply use the search box located in the upper right-hand corner and select how you would like to search using the drop down box. You can also do a power search and narrow your search by genre.
Although LegalSounds has songs priced individually, you have to create an account with them and place a minimum of $25 into your account. Once signed up and paid, you need to download LegalSound’s downloader app. From there, you can begin downloading your songs or albums.
LegalSounds only accepts credit card payments you can place online or over the phone.
Although LegalSounds seems legitimate, we suggest using extreme caution if you decide to use this service. Considering the price of each song, it’s quite likely that the artist or record company that you are downloading isn’t getting their cut of the deal. For MP3s that we know are paying their licensing fees, see Napster or Amazon MP3.
