iTunes Replay to Take Aim at Netflix, Alter Video Streaming Reality
Does anyone remember Lathe of Heaven, the 1980 PBS direct-to-TV film based on the Ursula K. Le Guin novel of the same name? You know, the one where everything the protagonist dreams becomes instant reality, and to everyone around him its the way it has always been? No?Oh. Well, currently making its way through the Apple's dream machine is a new service that just might give Netflix and other video content streaming services a run for their money: iTunes Replay.
iTunes Replay will stream TV shows, films and other video content purchased through iTunes, freeing up hard drive space and potentially allowing you to access your purchased content from anywhere. Details are still fuzzy, like most reality-altering dreams, but devices like Apple TV and, potentially, even the iPhone and iPod touch could also stream purchased content, which would, of course, be awesome, particularly for those that have maxed out their hard drive space and find selecting and unselecting iTunes music and video a painstaking, emotionally crippling task.
There is still no word on a release date, but, fortunately, iTunes Replay will be part of iTunes 8.0, meaning reality hasnt been altered too drastically.
